PART ONE
PART TWO

For the third and final installation, we have the following fandoms: Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wonderfalls, The Education of Max Bickford, 30 Rock, Lost, and a bunch of books.  Also some music.  Oh, and a thing about Ripley.

25 awesome women )

And that's it!  Who's on your list that I missed?
shah_of_blah: (kara sunshine)
Continuing with the "30 Days of Awesome Women" list that I began yesterday, here are 11-20.  You can read the first part here.

Fandoms include: Doctor Who, The Simpsons, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Alien, His Dark Materials, The Hunger Games, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Poisonwood Bible, Howl's Moving Castle, Discworld, Pushing Daisies, Arrested Development, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dexter, Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Farscape, Lost, Angel, and Bionic Woman.

26 awesome women )

Alright folks, I'll see you tomorrow with the third and final part!
shah_of_blah: (martha)
So here's the thing.  I'm not really into criticizing women (with a few exceptions).  There's far too much of that in the world, and I don't like to add to it.  Last week, I was reading this thing about some female characters in sci-fi, and it reminded me of the flowchart thingy that got linked all over the place a couple months ago.  Long story short, while I certainly see the value in speaking critically about the way women are written (and hell, I do it all the time) I feel it's detrimental to dismiss those women.  So I got the idea to do this post.  And I was going to post it on More Joy Day, which is today (Thursday) but I forgot and have only just remembered.  It will most likely not be Thursday anymore by the time I finish all the coding, so just know that I did start the post with a few minutes left in the day!

Anyway, I have been waiting for the opportune moment to post the "30 Days of Awesome Women" meme.  All in one day.  Or maybe three.  That moment may have been a couple of hours ago, but points for effort.

Behind the cut, you will find the first ten categories and LOTS of pictures.  Fandoms include: Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, X-Files, Veronica Mars, Doctor Who, Dexter, Firefly, Community, Angel, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Chuck, Wonderfalls, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Farscape, ...and I think that's all of them.  There will be more fandoms in the later parts.

Also I cheated and listed multiple characters for just about every category, so there are far more than ten women behind the cut.

22 awesome women )

Okay, that's all for now.  I'll be back with 11-20 tomorrow.  Probably.  And by "tomorrow" I really mean "later today" because it's not Thursday anymore.

In the meantime, feel free to chime in with other awesome women!

Meme!  Stolen from everybody.

the year in fandom )
shah_of_blah: (wolv eep)
1. After a few months of nothing, I have returned to the blogosphere.  You may read my reviews of Chuck Versus the Anniversary and Glee's Auditions at Critically Obsessed.  Or not, since they're mostly just prettified versions of my episode reaction posts on here.  Also at some point I will get off my ass and review Dexter, not to mention the next episodes of Chuck and Glee (short version: loved the latest Chuck, was profoundly bored by the latest Glee).  But as you may have noticed, I am a very lazy blogger.

But I do like to update this ol' thing with a bit more frequency, so...

2. I've decided to be Buffy for Halloween (with my friend who is going as Faith).  In honor of that, I've also decided to give this meme a shot!  I might not make it through all thirty days.  Or I might expedite the process like last time.  We'll see.

Day 1: Favorite Season

Season 3.  It's just classic Buffy.  It has everything--the heart of the team (Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles) and some Plus Ones (Angel, Oz, Cordelia...).  Angst and drama and character growth.  An amazing villain (Mayor Wilkins <3).  Great storylines.  And so intrinsically tied to the confusion of finishing high school.  It's pretty much just awesome.  There's only one episode that I would consider a 'bad' episode, and that's Dead Man's Party--and it's still pretty good (Giles mocks Americans!  Oz defines a hootenanny!  Zombies crash the party!).  So if that's the lowest point, the rest of the season has to be pretty damn great.  There's a reason [livejournal.com profile] visualthinker11  and I chose Season 3 for the [livejournal.com profile] hellmouth_vsds (which is that we love it, and also that Buffy and Angel really pile on the angst in this season).

Still need convincing?

clicky for awesome vid )

the rest of the meme. i haven't even read the whole list )

Oh yeah, and 3. "God Is A DJ" came up on iTunes shuffle today and it made me ridiculously happy.  I'm so excited to have the Kara vidlet-a-thon and the All the Galactica Ladies Ficathon to look forward to!  Yay more gen Kara stuff!  I am hereby giving this post my every week is kara week tag.  It is my favorite tag.

Also 4. I got my [livejournal.com profile] intoabar  assignment and I have noooooo idea what I am going to write.  But it's cool.  I'll figure something out.

Doctor Who: Cold Blood
spoiler alert )

On a lighter note, I am now in possession of a knitted sonic screwdriver.  Yes I am.  My friend made it for me, and it is every bit as awesome as you can imagine.

And now, how about some useless fangirling?
Day 14. Favorite male character

I actually couldn't think of many contenders for this category.  There are lots of male characters that I love, but few of them really stand out without their ensemble.  I thought about the Doctor, but I feel bad calling him a favorite when I have only seen 3 of his 11 selves.  Plus, I don't know...he hasn't quite earned that 'favorite' status.  So my answer: Malcolm Reynolds.

Now, I have no idea who made that image (got it from google) but isn't it wondrous?  Captain Reynolds.  Mal.  I loved you ever since you said "I just wanted you to face me so she could get behind you."  I love that you're mean.  I love that you're totally fine with having Zoe fight (and win) your battles.  I love that every Unification Day sees you fancying a drink in an Alliance-friendly bar.  I love that you may have been on the losing side, but you're not convinced it was the wrong side.  I love that Simon's on your crew and you don't know why you're still talking about this.  And, you know, I love your pretty floral bonnet.

Day 15. Favorite female character

This should be obvious.  Do I even need to say it?  Kara Thrace, you have consumed my attention ever since I watched you jogging through the corridors in the miniseries.  Since I have already expounded on my insane Kara love many times, I will just share a brief conversation that took place between me and my sister yesterday, as we perused EW's top 100 characters.

Sister: Oh look, it's Starbuck.  72.  Damn, that means Edward Cullen beat her.
Me: What?  Are you serious?  Well she's my No. 1.
Sister: ...Really?
Me: Um.  Yes.  Don't judge me.

ETA: I also realized that I wanted to say something about the "Dream On" episode of Glee, which only occurred to me the other day.  totally silly and inconsequential )

Part 2 (out of 3) of the writing meme!

11-20 )

Also because it's going around, I wanted to see if I could do the icon meme.  I only have fifteen icons, it was a bit of a challenge to see if I could find one to fit each category.

How do you feel right now?

icon meme )
So what else is new?  Today I watched Lost and Glee.  Wednesdays are going to be killers from here on out.  Glee was pretty good--a bit of a mess narrative-wise, but my world is brighter with Sue Sylvester in it.  As for Lost, this was just another week where I was left not knowing what to say.  At all.  I liked it, I think?  But I had a minor freak-out when I went looking for Jezebel's weekly recap and IT WASN'T THERE (it's there now) because I don't think I can handle this show anymore without some wise person telling me what to think.
shah_of_blah: (bees!)
freaking out. beware of capslock )

Also completely unrelated to Chuck, but earlier today I was listening to "Song For You" by Alexi Murdoch, a song that I have listened to many times (48, according to iTunes) but apparently never really listened to.  Because holy crap is it about Kara (with a side of your ship of choice).  Holy crap!

A sample:
'Cause you know it's a simple game
That you play filling up your head with rain
And you know you're hiding from your pain
In the way, the way you say your name

And I see you
Hiding your face in your hands
Flying so you won't land
Think no one understands
No one understands

Apparently today is More Joy Day.  Who knew?  First off, I don't have a thread on [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti  but a few of my flisters do and it seems like a groovy thing.  Check it out if you think you might be interested.  But if not, there are other options!  Cribbed from various places around the internet:

Text 'HAITI' to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross relief efforts or text "Yele" to 501501 to donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill) or you can visit www.yele.org and click 'donate'.

From MoveOn.org:
These three charities, and many others, are providing care. If you can contribute to help fund their emergency efforts, please do.

* Doctors Without Borders

* Oxfam America

* Yéle Haiti

And now, a few things that have brought me joy.  Some fandom, some not.

1) Question: Does anyone know how to burn my iTunes-purchased episodes onto a DVD? Is this at all possible? I have a Macbook. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

2) A couple of months ago, I made this playlist--my Starbuck playlist--for some reason that I have now forgotten. But, I thought I would share it with you all. This is a collection of songs that remind me of Kara.

There were a couple of songs that I couldn't find on grooveshark and couldn't figure out how to upload properly (technologically incompetent, thy name is Shah). But I have included links (to megaupload) with the notes on the playlists. Because I felt like it.

i ramble )

Status of my rewatch: 3 episodes of Glee, 3 of Dexter, Katee's Big Bang Theory epi, and the first episode of the Office.

I'm posting the three ficlets I've written for [livejournal.com profile] karathracelives  over here for easy access.  And also because the third one is too long to post in a comment.

Title: To Call Your Own
Prompt: battlestars I have known

When you get your first battlestar posting straight out of flight school, the days until your new assignment seem like a curse. )

Title: Father's Day
Prompt: father's day (what a surprise!)

When Kara was little, just five years old, she got tired of bedtime stories. )

Title: A Touch of Grace
Prompt: Kara takes ballet as part of her pyramid training
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] visualthinker11  for the emergency beta!

Frak that. )

shah_of_blah: (kara downfall)
I wrote most of this post about a month ago, and I didn't post it then because I wasn't sure there was a point to making a finale post so long after the finale.  And then stuff happened and I forgot about it until I rediscovered the file on my computer.  This all started when an innocent bystander mentioned the finale and I may have expressed some dissatisfaction with regards to the poof.  When asked to elaborate, well...the end result is that I have written a run-down of the various manifestations of Kara’s Special Destiny and all of the ways it fails in the big picture.

There have also been some rumblings recently of the ‘if you didn’t like the ending just because of what it did to your ship, that means you’re stupid’ variety.  Many people have already posted eloquent, well thought-out rebuttals of this sentiment, so I’ll keep mine brief.  I watched Battlestar Galactica for Kara Thrace.  I didn’t watch for the plot or the themes or its grand message about whatever.  Frankly, I never thought the show did as well with those things as it thought it did.  So I had low expectations on that front and therefore really don’t care that Lee sent all of their ships into the sun.  But regardless, as a writer and a reader/viewer, I’m interested in characters.  A story, for me, is about the people—who, not what.  And this story had some frakking amazing people.

So you know what?  I’m not particularly angry about the finale—what would be the point?  And I still loved a good portion of Daybreak.  But I was disappointed by the one thing that really mattered to me: Kara’s fate.  Here’s why.

The Special Destiny Manifesto )

When [livejournal.com profile] dionusia  first mentioned Kara Celebration Week, I immediately decided that I had to write some Kara fic for the occasion.  The only problem was I had no idea what to write.  This is what I came up with.  It is my longest bsg fic to date.

Title: Say Anything At All (or Five Confessions)
Disclaimer: Don’t own ‘em.
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Kara, Kara/Zak, Kara/Lee, Kara/Sam
Word Count: about 2700
Spoilers: Through 4.14, Blood on the Scales
Note: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tracyj23  for the beta!
Summary: Maybe, since she hadn’t learned to play the piano, she should have learned not to say anything at all.

Kara was never very good at being quiet )

shah_of_blah: (Default)
With it being Kara Celebration Week and all that, I tried to pinpoint just what it is about her that makes me fangirl her like no other. I have obsessed over shows and other things before, but I have never obsessed over a character like this. So this is not exactly meta. It probably won't tell you anything you didn't already know about Kara, but I enjoyed writing it.

My love affair with Kara Thrace )

Feel free to chime in with why you love Kara!

shah_of_blah: (wolv eep)
I am not a vidder or even an avid watcher of vids by any stretch of the imagination, but I’ve hung around and found a few that I adore.  So consider this a vid recs list for people who don’t know anything about vids, and rarely watch them.  If you are a vidder, you've probably seen all of these (and many more), but if you're like me maybe some of these will be new to you.  Or so I hope!

a humble/short list )

For more vid recs, I'd suggest heading over to [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 's journal.  That's where I found most of the vids I've watched and liked.  Plus, I see she's just posted more recs, most of which I haven't seen before.  As you can see, I'm really not well versed in the vidding section of this fandom.  If there's a vid that you think should be on this list, please say so!  And don't be shy to rec your own vid.  Odds are I haven't seen it.

shah_of_blah: (kara sunshine)
Yes, it is time to celebrate our girl!  (Well, it's always time to celebrate her in my book)

I have gathered, um, a few of my favorite Kara fics.  This is by no means all of the great Kara fic out there.  It's mostly the great Kara fic that I have bookmarked, hence easy access to the links.  Feel free to comment with any Kara fic you think should also be on this list!  But first, I shall point you in the direction of this list by [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 from 2007.  Now, here are a few of my favorite fics that aren’t on this list.  I’m trying for gen, or fics that are at least more about Kara than a ship.  Also preferably from Kara's perspective.  That said, you all know my tendency towards Kara/Lee, so I couldn’t keep him out of here.

In no particular order )

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777  has beat me to it with some of these.  Consider them doubly-recced.  Also, I am having rich text issues.
