Yeah, Jane Espenson wrote pretty much exclusively humor on Buffy, and it wasn't until Firefly that I really started to like her writing. I mean, who doesn't love Shindig? But I did really like The Passage, and that one in 4.0 that she wrote (although that one had a lot of Gaius).
there needs to be a better balance between the humanist story and the underlying arc and I think often they're just not achieving it well. Very true. They used to be really good at mixing the personal with the overall story until season 3 (or late season 2). Now it seems like they don't have time for the personal relationships, but then they dump lots of A/R or Tigh/whoever on us, and still ignore everybody else. *is bitter*
