I finished my angry Lost essay that has been in the works for quite some time.  It's up at Critically Obsessed, but I will post a teaser here.  A very long teaser.  The essay is approximately 2000 words in total.

Disclaimer: If you really like Lost, you might not want to read this essay.

Day 26. OMG WTF? Season finale

For this category, we have a tie for first place.  You can't talk about "OMG WTF?" without talking about Lost.  That's kind of their specialty.  Here be spoilers for Lost season 4.

lost )
The other "OMG WTF?" season finale is the series finale of Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles.  t:scc spoilers )

Day 27. Favorite series finale

Do we still need spoiler alerts for something that aired seven years ago?  Anyway, look away if you don't want spoilers for the series finale of Buffy.

Honestly, I think "Chosen" is as close to perfection as possible.  Joss has so much love for these characters, and this episode is suffused with that love.  I love it from beginning to end, from Buffy slicing and dicing Caleb to the good old "Welcome to Sunnydale" sign tumbling into the crater.  The episode is chock full of that brilliant combination of funny and heartwarming.  I mean, it's got "Oh my god, are you twelve?" and "I'm drowning in footwear" and the cannon fodder and "What would be the surprise?"  And that's only, like, the first 15 minutes.  I mean, seriously, they play D&D in this episode on the night before stopping ultimate evil.  Not to mention Anya and Andrew being hilarious and awesome, and Willow going all white witch and Spike with the amulet, et cetera et cetera.

But more than all that, there are two things I really love about this series finale:
1. "The Earth is definitely doomed."  This callback to the very beginning was so perfectly executed.  As soon as Giles opened his mouth, I knew what he was going to say.  I think I cheered.  It just showed so much care, so much respect.  Like this was the perfect bookend to a frakking amazing show.
2. Well, you know.  "Are you ready to be strong?"  Joss has said that he knew where he wanted to go from early on in the series, and it shows.  Instead of just saving the world, they changed it.  Buffy is one of the few shows I've really cared about that ended on its own terms, with no threat of cancellation.  It was such a graceful ending that a part of me almost wishes they'd never resurrected the series in comic book form.  I've been reading season 8, but I might not read season 9.  I just don't think they'll ever be able to top this series finale.  It's the only ending I ever wanted for the show.  And even though I was heartbroken that the show was ending, I felt nothing but complete satisfaction with the way it ended.
shah_of_blah: (bret looking cool)
First of all, a couple Lost links, because clearly I was mistaken when I said that the last post would be my last Lost post.  Here's some really interesting meta about the finale, with lots of retrospection and philosophizing: The Lost Finale: And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain.  And here is a video that made me laugh: Unanswered Lost Questions.

Day 08. A show everyone should watch

I gave this a fair amount of thought, because it's hard to find a show that appeals to, you know, "everyone."  The runner-up for this category is Wonderfalls, because I think it's pretty damn close to having universal appeal.  But I already did that one earlier in the meme.  So instead, I give you...Flight of the Conchords!

persuasion in video form )

Day 09. Best scene ever

"Best scene ever" is kind of difficult.  I'm just going to pick a scene that I love, from an episode that I love.  And hopefully one that I can find on youtube.  Nope, can't find it.  Damn.  Will just have to use screencaps.  The scene is from the Firefly episode "Objects in Space," which is my favorite episode of the show, and one of my favorite episodes of television ever.  I think it's stunningly beautiful, if you can't tell from my header.  My favorite scene is towards the end of the episode, when Jubal Early has incapacitated all of the crew (or so he thinks) and has a gun aimed at Simon as he calls for River to surrender before he shoots her brother.

shah_of_blah: (kara occupation)
Okay, so I've spent awhile now trying to work out exactly what I think about the Lost finale.  spoilers )

Goodbye, Lost.  It's been real.

And I've got some of that meme as well.
Day 06. Favorite episode of your favorite TV show

Now, with seven season of Buffy to choose from, I have a lot of favorite episodes of this show. The obvious answer would be Once More, With Feeling.  And I do love it.  But I think I'll have to go with something a little different: Graduation Day.  I frakking love Graduation Day.  It's my favorite of all the season finales (and this show had some damn fine finales).  It's so exciting, and so sad and so sweet and so funny...you get the idea.  I'm pretty sure I cheered when Buffy yelled, "Now!"

Day 07. Least favorite episode of your favorite TV show

Unlike the last question, this one is easy.  Where the Wild Things Are.  Godawful episode.  I have nothing more to say about it.

As a bonus, since my flist is all about the BSG, I'll tell you my least favorite episode(s) of that show too!  Everyone always complains about Black Market and the Woman King.  Yes, they're stupid episodes.  But I think they are both far superior to Taking A Break From All Your Worries and A Day in the Life.  So it's between those two.  I think I have to go with TAB.  And it's not just because TAB breaks up my OTP.  It's because the episode is poorly written, poorly cobbled together, and makes no sense.  Lee sobbing in the corridor is pretty bad, but what really kills this episode for me is Laura, Adama and Cottle (Cottle of all people!) engaging in horrific torture of a prisoner.  Next to that, Black Market hardly compares, in my mind.
shah_of_blah: (bad horse)
But first, totally unrelated to Lost--a PSA.  Of a sort.  So, many people are struggling through finals right now, and hopefully not reading my LJ if that's the case, but, well.  As of 11pm last night, I am officially on vacation, hence using today to catch up on all the TV I missed in the last few days.  But one thing that helped me out a lot this past week was this awesome little app called Self Control.  You can download it for free, and then you create a blocklist and designate a time period.  For example, I blocked Facebook and Livejournal for several hours yesterday, and until the time was up my computer would not let me access either website.  Awesome!  Self control for the people who have none.  Okay, /psa.

And now, a meme.  Just because.  I spent a ridiculous amount of time on this.  Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns .

Pick 15 of your ships and write down a quote for each of them. Let your f-list guess. Looking them up on IMDb or Google is cheating. I only did 10 because I'm lazy and couldn't be bothered finding quotes for five more.  Also, I didn't check all of these with transcripts, so there might be a few mistakes.

So what else is new?  Today I watched Lost and Glee.  Wednesdays are going to be killers from here on out.  Glee was pretty good--a bit of a mess narrative-wise, but my world is brighter with Sue Sylvester in it.  As for Lost, this was just another week where I was left not knowing what to say.  At all.  I liked it, I think?  But I had a minor freak-out when I went looking for Jezebel's weekly recap and IT WASN'T THERE (it's there now) because I don't think I can handle this show anymore without some wise person telling me what to think.

Have a list

Things that are good:
  • Making progress on the fic, although I still have a ways to go.  In retrospect, I never could have finished before the original deadline.  Not without many sleepless nights and a serious decline in the quality of the fic.
  • Lost: I know nothing about tonight's episode but I really enjoyed last week's.  Judging by the comments on the Jezebel recap for the episode, I might be in the minority.  Oh well.  I love Sun and Jin!  Theirs is probably the only relationship I'm actually invested in.  My short list of people I want to survive features the Kwon family.
  • Community: I started watching this weekend.  I am six episodes in and this is fabulous.  Seriously.  Everyone who told me to watch this show...well, you weren't wrong!
  • Chuck: brief reaction )
  • Doctor Who: This is the week of awesome television.  Seriously.  Matt Smith and Amy Pond, you've convinced me.  You are awesome.  I don't even mind the new TARDIS overly much.  I do mind, however, the new intro music.  It used to be so awesome.  Seriously, why would you mess that up Moffat?
  • You remember when I posted those two pieces of original fiction awhile back, and I was looking for concrit?  Because I was applying to a highly selective writing class?  Well, they posted the list on Monday and I made it!  I've been walking on air ever since.
  • Browser Pong: I will soon be the master.  (Caution: almost as much of a time waster as tvtropes)

Updates on Shah's [fandom] life:

-I've been watching (and enjoying, even) the new Lost episodes, but I can't figure out what to say about them.  I don't have thinky thoughts or theories.  And I'm not particularly flaily about it these days, so my liveblogs would pretty much consist of me going, "Huh."  BUT I will just say that this Hurley line from the latest episode was perfect: "You and me, trekking through the jungle on our way to do something that we don't quite understand.  Good times."  Anyway, I've also been enjoying the Jezebel recaps, which are quite insightful and also fun.  I like reading the comments too sometimes, and seeing how much some people (i.e. not me) know about the show.

-My turn on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van  is almost up.  It's been fun!  Somebody's signed up for bsg recs in March (yay!) but April is up for grabs...hint hint.  It's not hard.  You can rec exclusively Lee/Pigeon fic if you want.

-What's that, you say?  Am I still working on my [livejournal.com profile] pilotsbigbang  fic?  Why yes, yes I am.  I've surpassed (barely) the point I was at before the computer disaster.  But I'm still waaaaaay behind and it is not exactly going well.  But I think my brain is just refusing to cooperate because I need sleep/a job/release from midterms.  So, you know, I'd better get on that.

-And for Hunger Games readers on my flist, I read Catching Fire last week.  In under 24 hours.  It was glorious.

-I finally watched The End of Time (DW).  It was pretty good.  I'm ready for Eleven.  And in related news, the real reason for this post!bigger on the inside )

Uh.  Yeah.  Okay.  I think there was something else I was going to post about...hm...

Oh, [livejournal.com profile] krilymcc  is hosting a multi-fandom fic battle thingy here.  Somebody should write my Kara/Sayid prompt, because I think it would be tacky for me to do it myself...

Also, somebody prompt me for this meme!

This is just to say...

finale spoilers )

So anyway Lost, it's been fun.  See you in 2010.

Also I typed this post up shortly after the end of the episode, and then got distracted for a few hours.

Also also, if Kara and Sayid teamed up, there would be badassery of epic proportions.  Just saying.

shah_of_blah: (wolv eep)
Just in general--I don't know what I'm talking about.  It's occurred to me that I haven't posted anything about bsg since the week after the finale, which is odd since I still consider bsg to be my primary fandom (arguably only--I post about other shows but don't engage in particularly fannish activities).  But then again, it makes sense since when the show was on hiatus I posted only a few times a month (mostly when I had fic, or something relevant to share).  And I will still be posting bsg fic.  I have one that's in the editing stage, one that I've just begun, and two more plottish fics (one is a Firefly crossover).  But in the meantime, I'm not sure what to do bsg-wise with this journal.  So, uh, I'm posting to say that I do not know what to post.  Instead of writing my research paper.

No, I have another thing to talk about!  Lost & Found, you know, Katee's pilot that I really, really want to see on the small screen.  NBC has not announced it for the fall schedule, but there's still a chance they'll pick it up for the midseason slot.  And if anyone wants to help out, there is more information at Lost & Found Online.  And omg I want her hair in that picture.

Hmm, what else?  Lost!  I liked Lost this week, mostly.  I like Richard.

Dollhouse: Briar Rose
hot damn! )

And in case anyone cares, I recently viewed a film version of Othello, directed by Geoffrey Sax and starring Eamonn Walker and none other than Christopher Eccleston.  Christopher Eccleston is, as always, amazing, but in this case so is the entire movie.  It's a modernized version of the play, as in contemporary London with contemporary language.  It's not afraid to depart from Shakespeare's text, but all of its departures are purposeful and clever.  This isn't "O" or "10 Things I Hate About You" or "She's the Man" or any of that nonsense.  My professor (who is usually incredibly critical about all Shakespearean productions) described it as "the Othello Shakespeare might have written if he were alive today."  So yeah, fans of Christopher Eccleston and/or Shakespeare might want to check that out.

Because I never watch anything on time, my weekly tv round-up!

Lost: Dead Is Dead

Dollhouse!  A Spy in the House of Love.  I hate this title.  It is cheesy.  The episode was not though!

good, but confusing )

P.S. The missing Pushing Daisies episodes will be airing this summer!  Starting May 30

Things that would make Lost better:

some vague/random spoilers from tonight's episode )

I also saw a preview for Castle while I was watching Lost, and I am definitely going to watch it even though it doesn't really look very good.  Nathan Fillion + kinda scruffy = something I will watch.  Dude, I watched Slither for him.  But since I kind of enjoyed that movie, it's not a great example of my fannish sacrifices.  I did, however, sit through White Noise 2.  Somehow the makers of that movie managed to make a movie starring Nathan Fillion and Katee Sackhoff (a combination that should have been awesome) that was phenomenally boring.

In other news, I am currently two minutes into the latest Flight of the Conchords episode and so far it is about a cup.  This is shaping up to be a great episode!  I am completely serious.  No really, I am.

shah_of_blah: (bees!)
Um, so I was watching the Lost season finale with my friend and her family.  And they are also Battlestar fans (thanks to me!  mwahahaha) so...well...I loved the episode.  I was freaking out pretty much the entire two hours.  But at some point during the freaking out (probably during a commercial break) we were discussing the island and time travel, and earlier in the evening we had been discussing Battlestar, and what time period Earth is at, and alternate universes, and I'd been thinking a lot about the whole cyclical thing, and...well...wackiness ensued.  During a commercial break.
