PART ONE
PART TWO

For the third and final installation, we have the following fandoms: Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wonderfalls, The Education of Max Bickford, 30 Rock, Lost, and a bunch of books.  Also some music.  Oh, and a thing about Ripley.

25 awesome women )

And that's it!  Who's on your list that I missed?

Continuing with the "30 Days of Awesome Women" list that I began yesterday, here are 11-20.  You can read the first part here.

Fandoms include: Doctor Who, The Simpsons, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Alien, His Dark Materials, The Hunger Games, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Poisonwood Bible, Howl's Moving Castle, Discworld, Pushing Daisies, Arrested Development, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dexter, Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Farscape, Lost, Angel, and Bionic Woman.

26 awesome women )

Alright folks, I'll see you tomorrow with the third and final part!
shah_of_blah: (martha)
So here's the thing.  I'm not really into criticizing women (with a few exceptions).  There's far too much of that in the world, and I don't like to add to it.  Last week, I was reading this thing about some female characters in sci-fi, and it reminded me of the flowchart thingy that got linked all over the place a couple months ago.  Long story short, while I certainly see the value in speaking critically about the way women are written (and hell, I do it all the time) I feel it's detrimental to dismiss those women.  So I got the idea to do this post.  And I was going to post it on More Joy Day, which is today (Thursday) but I forgot and have only just remembered.  It will most likely not be Thursday anymore by the time I finish all the coding, so just know that I did start the post with a few minutes left in the day!

Anyway, I have been waiting for the opportune moment to post the "30 Days of Awesome Women" meme.  All in one day.  Or maybe three.  That moment may have been a couple of hours ago, but points for effort.

Behind the cut, you will find the first ten categories and LOTS of pictures.  Fandoms include: Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, X-Files, Veronica Mars, Doctor Who, Dexter, Firefly, Community, Angel, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Chuck, Wonderfalls, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Farscape, ...and I think that's all of them.  There will be more fandoms in the later parts.

Also I cheated and listed multiple characters for just about every category, so there are far more than ten women behind the cut.

22 awesome women )

Okay, that's all for now.  I'll be back with 11-20 tomorrow.  Probably.  And by "tomorrow" I really mean "later today" because it's not Thursday anymore.

In the meantime, feel free to chime in with other awesome women!

My [livejournal.com profile] intoabar  fic!  This is completely unbetaed.  Also surprisingly maudlin.  I'm not British, so if anyone notices mistakes in Jackie's speech, please let me know.  Title is from a line in Richard Thompson's beautiful "Waltzing's for Dreamers."

And we'll drink out old memories and we'll drink in the dawn.
-Richard Thompson, Waltzing's for Dreamers

AN: AU for the end of BSG.  No spoilers for anything.

1. I had this epiphany today about Mockingjay.  It's probably not anywhere near as brilliant as I thought it was.  It's also very short and vague but I will lj-cut it anyway for those of you who (like me) consider feelings to be spoilers.  Read more... )  See, I told you it was brief and not-really-significant.

2. I went to see Going the Distance (don't mock me) and it's a sign of just how obsessed I am that I was reminded of Kara and Lee.  Drew Barrymore's character said that she thought people could only be truly content if they married their best friend.  And I was like "yes, that is why they would have been amazing if they had ever gotten their act together!"  Also it's not news, but pilots have infiltrated all aspects of my life.

3. I am still watching Farscape season 2, but very, very slowly.

4. So my birthday was a few days ago (thanks for the birthday wishes everyone!), and my friend gave me this absolutely amazing hand-crafted gift.  This is the same friend who turned my door into the TARDIS last semester.

In order: Martha, Donna, Ten, Jack, Rose, and Mickey.

Doctor Who fans on my flist, run (do not walk) to [livejournal.com profile] chaila43 's journal to read her excellent piece of meta, The Obligatory River/Eleven Feminist Manifesto.  I'm thinking I need a River Song icon to express my crazy love for her and all that.  Maybe I will trade in my Martha icon even though it is lovely.

I don't have much else to report.  I am working on season 2 of Farscape, and I like it but still have mixed feelings.  Love Aeryn.  Go back and forth on John.  I'm liking Chiana.  I really liked Zan (sp?) before but not so much now.  I don't really care for D'Argo, and I don't see the point of Rigel.  And they could do with some better bad guys.  Ah well, I am enjoying it.

I am also, oddly enough, rewatching The Education of Max Bickford.  I don't even know why (because it's there?) but I still love Nell and mostly enjoy the rest of the show too.  Even if I occasionally fast-forward through the boring bits.

But I keep getting distracted by the genius that is Third Rock from the Sun.  Seriously.  Genius.  I appreciate it so much more now that I am older and actually get the jokes.

I have not been writing anywhere near as much as I should be.  I am filling my summer with fantasy reads though.  To wit, I loved the Lies of Locke Lamora, am not loving The Graveyard Book, and am re-reading The Demon's Covenant AGAIN (oh Nicholas Ryves, why so tempting?).

So I have written this essay about women in Doctor Who.  Turns out I was angrier than I thought!  Anyway, here's a selection (full text on the blog).

1. I need to rewatch "The Pandorica Opens" before Saturday, but somewhere between episodes 3 and 4 of Farscape I decided that I like this show and now I just want to watch the 5th episode.  Damn.  Why can't I just watch TV all day instead of working?  I am henceforth giving Farscape a tag.

2. Speaking of "The Pandorica Opens," my review is here on Critically Obsessed (that blog I've been talking about).  And if anyone didn't know which of the reviewers I was before now, this post should make it obvious.

3. I think I have actually finished my [livejournal.com profile] pilotsbigbang  fic.

4. Ghana is advancing to the second round and France is not.  This is officially my favorite men's World Cup ever.  And by "ever" I mean since 2002, since that was when I decided to give men's soccer a chance (I was all women's all the time before then).  Nothing against France.  I just enjoy upsets, and South Africa beating France was lovely news indeed.
shah_of_blah: (jon stewart)
YOU GUYS, I just realized that the [livejournal.com profile] pilotsbigbang  fics are due on the day that an explosion is going to tear a crack in the fabric of the universe.  And if there are two things I don't believe in, they're coincidences and leprechauns.

Anyway, I, uh, watched Doctor Who ("The Pandorica Opens").  what it says on the tin )

In other news, I am still writing things.  And am also now pondering a blog post about Doctor Who that might be titled something like "Genderfail in Doctor Who, or I Love River Song and I Don't Care Who Frakking Knows."  And I think I need a new DW icon...
shah_of_blah: (Default)
This "30 Days of TV" nonsense has led to me posting WAY more than usual.  Not sure how I feel about that.  Anyhoo, I had, like, a three-way tie for the next category until I stole my friend's idea.  But today you get two runner-ups. And some pilotlove.

Days 20&21: making out and stuff )

In other news, last night's Glee brought back my original favorite character (as in my favorite part of the pilot), Howard.  What does it say about me that two of my favorite characters from this show are Puck and the guy who can't fold a fitted sheet?  I think Howard goes along with Toby (The Office) and Greg (Flight of the Conchords) as my belovedly blah characters.  Love 'em.

Also, Movieline's rather humorous (intentionally?) attempt to tie up almost 100 of Lost's questions led me to believe that the problem isn't so much that they didn't give us answers, but that the answers they gave us are dumb.  I mean, 'it combines water and light,' wtf is that?  Okay, I'm done talking about Lost.  Really this time.
shah_of_blah: (martha)
Doctor Who: Cold Blood
spoiler alert )

On a lighter note, I am now in possession of a knitted sonic screwdriver.  Yes I am.  My friend made it for me, and it is every bit as awesome as you can imagine.

And now, how about some useless fangirling?
Day 14. Favorite male character

I actually couldn't think of many contenders for this category.  There are lots of male characters that I love, but few of them really stand out without their ensemble.  I thought about the Doctor, but I feel bad calling him a favorite when I have only seen 3 of his 11 selves.  Plus, I don't know...he hasn't quite earned that 'favorite' status.  So my answer: Malcolm Reynolds.

Now, I have no idea who made that image (got it from google) but isn't it wondrous?  Captain Reynolds.  Mal.  I loved you ever since you said "I just wanted you to face me so she could get behind you."  I love that you're mean.  I love that you're totally fine with having Zoe fight (and win) your battles.  I love that every Unification Day sees you fancying a drink in an Alliance-friendly bar.  I love that you may have been on the losing side, but you're not convinced it was the wrong side.  I love that Simon's on your crew and you don't know why you're still talking about this.  And, you know, I love your pretty floral bonnet.

Day 15. Favorite female character

This should be obvious.  Do I even need to say it?  Kara Thrace, you have consumed my attention ever since I watched you jogging through the corridors in the miniseries.  Since I have already expounded on my insane Kara love many times, I will just share a brief conversation that took place between me and my sister yesterday, as we perused EW's top 100 characters.

Sister: Oh look, it's Starbuck.  72.  Damn, that means Edward Cullen beat her.
Me: What?  Are you serious?  Well she's my No. 1.
Sister: ...Really?
Me: Um.  Yes.  Don't judge me.

ETA: I also realized that I wanted to say something about the "Dream On" episode of Glee, which only occurred to me the other day.  totally silly and inconsequential )
shah_of_blah: (never fade away)
So, I’ve had His Dark Materials on my mind lately, especially the end. And I don’t want to go into specifics for anyone who might not want spoilers, but it got me thinking. I read The Amber Spyglass when I was a wee thing, and it was the very first work of fiction (be it a book, show, or movie) that made me cry. I remember reading with my mom throughout my childhood, and she’d be sobbing over Anne of Green Gables (I mean, yeah, that one part is really sad) or Black Gold or whatnot and I’d be a rock. Never shed a single tear. But Will and Lyra changed that. Ever since that book, I cry at a lot of books/shows/movies.  But not always the ones you’d expect. Um. So, this post is about things that have made me cry! And by “things” I mostly mean TV shows, but feel free to bring in other works. I want to know what makes you cry! That sounds weird, but it’s true. And gosh, I hope I'm not the only one who thinks about these things.

This is not a comprehensive list. Gods, but there are way too many for me to remember!

a mixed bag )

So readers, what makes you cry? Enquiring minds want to know. Well, I do anyway.  Maybe that’s just my morbid curiosity talking. But what tugs on your heartstrings like no other?  I hope I'm not the only one who enjoys talking about these things!

*The absolute worst movies I've ever seen, if anyone wants to know, would be the following (in no particular order): Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Nine, and Vantage Point.

Brief and insubstantial thoughts on the latest Doctor Who episode:
tiny, tiny spoiler )

Have a list

shah_of_blah: (martha)
Things that are good:
  • Making progress on the fic, although I still have a ways to go.  In retrospect, I never could have finished before the original deadline.  Not without many sleepless nights and a serious decline in the quality of the fic.
  • Lost: I know nothing about tonight's episode but I really enjoyed last week's.  Judging by the comments on the Jezebel recap for the episode, I might be in the minority.  Oh well.  I love Sun and Jin!  Theirs is probably the only relationship I'm actually invested in.  My short list of people I want to survive features the Kwon family.
  • Community: I started watching this weekend.  I am six episodes in and this is fabulous.  Seriously.  Everyone who told me to watch this show...well, you weren't wrong!
  • Chuck: brief reaction )
  • Doctor Who: This is the week of awesome television.  Seriously.  Matt Smith and Amy Pond, you've convinced me.  You are awesome.  I don't even mind the new TARDIS overly much.  I do mind, however, the new intro music.  It used to be so awesome.  Seriously, why would you mess that up Moffat?
  • You remember when I posted those two pieces of original fiction awhile back, and I was looking for concrit?  Because I was applying to a highly selective writing class?  Well, they posted the list on Monday and I made it!  I've been walking on air ever since.
  • Browser Pong: I will soon be the master.  (Caution: almost as much of a time waster as tvtropes)

Updates on Shah's [fandom] life:

-I've been watching (and enjoying, even) the new Lost episodes, but I can't figure out what to say about them.  I don't have thinky thoughts or theories.  And I'm not particularly flaily about it these days, so my liveblogs would pretty much consist of me going, "Huh."  BUT I will just say that this Hurley line from the latest episode was perfect: "You and me, trekking through the jungle on our way to do something that we don't quite understand.  Good times."  Anyway, I've also been enjoying the Jezebel recaps, which are quite insightful and also fun.  I like reading the comments too sometimes, and seeing how much some people (i.e. not me) know about the show.

-My turn on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van  is almost up.  It's been fun!  Somebody's signed up for bsg recs in March (yay!) but April is up for grabs...hint hint.  It's not hard.  You can rec exclusively Lee/Pigeon fic if you want.

-What's that, you say?  Am I still working on my [livejournal.com profile] pilotsbigbang  fic?  Why yes, yes I am.  I've surpassed (barely) the point I was at before the computer disaster.  But I'm still waaaaaay behind and it is not exactly going well.  But I think my brain is just refusing to cooperate because I need sleep/a job/release from midterms.  So, you know, I'd better get on that.

-And for Hunger Games readers on my flist, I read Catching Fire last week.  In under 24 hours.  It was glorious.

-I finally watched The End of Time (DW).  It was pretty good.  I'm ready for Eleven.  And in related news, the real reason for this post!bigger on the inside )
