I was already loving this--Kara's sense of freedom in contrast with the other students, her giddiness. And then you just ripped my heart in two with this line: As her fingers traced the etched bronze she swallowed the first shards of something like fear and wished, for a moment, that she could take it back before it—he—was taken from her.

When he would come she couldn’t think of a reason to turn him away and when he would leave she couldn’t think of a reason to ask him to stay. So she did neither.
