Jude starring Christopher Eccleston and Kate Winslet.  I didn't know much (read: anything) about the movie and I was pretty much just watching it because I found it and it had CE's name on the cover.

Maybe forty minutes in I had a minor nerd freakout because none other than DAVID TENNANT showed up as some random guy in a bar and challenged Christopher Eccleston to, like, some battle of Latin or whatever.  He had about two lines (and got pwned by CE's character) but I was highly amused.  Guys, the movie is from 1996!

In case I haven't made it clear here, I totally adore Christopher Eccleston and Nine.  Love them.  Did not love this movie.  Oh, it was well-written and well-acted and well-directed and all that but it was also essentially two hours of DESPAIR.  It was quite compelling, but not unlike a trainwreck.  I thought it was going to be a period romance, and it nominally was but it was also the most upsetting movie I've seen in a long time.  I DID NOT SLEEP AFTER I WATCHED IT.

Yeah, Jude is a so-so adaptation of Thomas Hardy's horribly depressing book Jude the Obscure. Thomas Hardy is just about the most depressing author ever to exist: books filled with not-so-very-likable characters who always die after leading horridly tortured lives. (Train wreck is a very apt description!) Jude the Obscure may just be his most depressing book – though I actually have always liked it. But that's what you get for choosing your movies based on who's in them! ;-)

Haha, totally. I think this is a sign that CE should make some happy movies just for me.

Is that an adaptation of Jude the Obscure? I tried really hard not to read that in school. Even the Cliff's Notes depressed me.

So I'm told. I think you made the right decision.
