How does a military tribunal work?  Who serves as the judges or whatever?  Is there any sort of defense/prosecution?  How long after the crime could the tribunal reasonably take place?  And most importantly, who would have jurisdiction: the Admiral of the Fleet or the CO of the ship (as they are, in this case, different)?

Many thanks to anyone who knows the answers or can point me in the right direction...  I recently returned to my old plotfic only to hit a stumbling block.  I need like a military wiki or something.  (Oh man, I just googled "military wiki" and there is one but my "military tribunal" search got no results)

In unrelated news, I recently purchased season one of Doctor Who (for 10 soles!  That's like $3.50!) and amused myself yesterday by reading the Spanish subtitles in the episode "Dalek."  For the most part, they were pretty accurate, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why the Doctor would repeatedly call the Dalek "lechuga" (lettuce).  Just...what?

Also, I think I watched Back to the Future in Spanish yesterday.  I missed the beginning, and didn't know what I was watching until I heard them say Dollorien.  I don't know what I was expecting, but...really?  This is the movie so many people are obsessed with?  I'll stick to my DW/lechuga.

I think back to the future suffers from the advances that we've had in the past few decades.

I hope you enjoy Dr Who. If 'Blink' is in there I've heard you might want to watch it during the day.

:)

Oh, I've seen Blink! And yes, I did watch it during the day.

Back to the Future was good back in its day. Now we know so much and science fiction (and maybe science?) has come so far. But back then it was fun to contemplate the possibilities.

As Leo McGarry said on the West Wing, "Where's my jetpack?" Yeah, seriously, it's been twenty years. I want my hovercraft too. :-)

Yeah, I think I've come too late to the Back to the Future party. Also, you know, I missed the beginning and was watching in a second language, so I didn't exactly catch everything. But I was quite impressed by the fact that Seamus was speaking Spanish with an Irish accent. Or some approximation thereof.

Back to Future is one of my favorites but its not the same watching it now as it was years ago. We have made so many advances that some of it just looks too silly. Still fun to watch.

I tried looking up some info on military tribunal but I got nothing. If I find anything I'll send it your way.

I definitely enjoyed Back to the Future. It just wasn't what I was expecting. I sort of thought it would be more...epic and less comedic.

Thanks for looking! I appreciate it. If i can't figure it out, I'll probably just make some stuff up to fit in the story.

Back to the Future is a lot more comedic then one would think.

I haven't really found anything concrete but military tribunals are only held for persons not within the military like a enemy of the state. If the US military were to charge and prosecute someone they wouldn't hold a military tribunal but the person would get court martialed. I couldn't really get any info on how the judges are chosen but for the world tribunal the judges are already chosen like the Supreme court. If an emergency tribunal needed to take place like on a carrier, the CO would be the judge or they can fly another higher military personnel in. That last bit is just what I remember from JAG. Sorry that's all I have.

Turns out, I saw Back to the Future III (and I didn't even know there were sequels).

Well, thank you so much! You have already saved me from the mistake of calling it a military tribunal then. In this case, an officer commits a crime aboard the Pegasus. So the officer will face court martial. At least I have a better idea what I'm looking for now! I'm going to assume for now that the CO would be in charge of the court martial too.

Back to the Future has sequels, didn't know that!

As far as the scenario you gave me, the ship's XO can be in charge of the court martial or he can assign someone else if he think it may cause bias. If Lee the Pegasus XO and one of his crew members is on trial, he can get the Admiral to head to court martial.
