Dexter: I don't really know how to talk articulately about this show because I love every episode and every character. So I'm usually just like "but it's SO GOOD" and can't manage much more than that. But it is so good! I found 5.02 easier to watch than the premiere. It was still heart-breaking but I wasn't a nervous wreck for the whole episode. Although I did shed a few tears when Dexter was saying goodbye to Cody and Astor. Oh dear.
And oh god the sketches. Dexter, sometimes you can be so stupid. You may have an airtight alibi, but you also have no way to explain the fact that you were inside Arthur's garage not to mention the part where that family could ID him in a second if anyone ever thinks to ask them why Trinity would've targeted Rita. And oh god Dexter your family!
This show is really not good for my composure.
Chuck: I think Chuck Versus the Suitcase has been my favorite so far, but I quite liked Cubic Z as well. Although I don't remember why it was called that. I like Big Mike and the rest of the Buy More squad. I didn't really care about the two prisoners, but Chuck and Sarah having issues which they then discuss in a completely functional manner? Oh my god, I love it. I was just surprised they didn't burst out onto the Buy More stage and have an actual Spy Attack.
Glee: This one was weird. I liked it better than the Britney one (which I thought was completely and utterly stupid) but I felt very conflicted about it. For the most part, I was annoyed by the reactions to the fact that Kurt is an atheist. I know Ohio is more politically and socially conservative than my whereabouts, but in this day and age most young people would not be shocked/horrified/scandalized to learn that somebody *gasp* doesn't believe in God.
And then they spend most of the episodes singing religious songs at him. Will calls it a lesson in spirituality. And yes, they had good intentions, but if someone is uncomfortable with your religious advances you don't keep preaching until they agree with you. It doesn't work that way. You back off and respect that atheism is a valid opinion and doesn't have to be because of some deep, dark trauma. I was really on Sue's side this week. But I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that Sue had to champion separation of church and state, given that she's the meanest person on this show and the fact that Will and Emma as educators ought to at least respect that. Yes, you can and should teach people about religion, but given what we saw in this episode, it didn't really seem like Will was going to provide a balanced, rational discussion.
Still, this episode redeemed itself in three ways. 1) Kurt's rendition of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was beautiful and moving and reinforced my opinion that his relationship with his father is the best relationship on the show. 2) Mercedes bringing Kurt to her church so he can wear a "fabulous hat." Finally, one of Kurt's friends did something genuinely helpful for him. And I forget what exactly she said, but I think it had something to do with "you don't have to believe in God," which brings me to... 3) Kurt's final scene with his father, in which he says he does not believe in God but he believes in his father. Thank you. Finally.
So I think I ended up liking the episode, but I'm not really sure.
The Big Bang Theory: This one was hi-larious! Ohmygod the game they were playing in the beginning. Too good. Poor Leonard. The "I'm worried about Sheldon" conversation in the cafeteria. The 25 cats, all named after members of the Manhatten Project except for Zazzle? Too funny. I usually just expect to be mildly amused by this show, but I actually want to watch this episode again, right now.
Community: I don't know if it's just me, but I didn't love the first two episodes of the season, while everyone else seemed to think they were fantastic. But I loved this one! John Oliver and Student Chang and their mutually assured destruction. Not to mention all of the "What is anthropology?" discussion. I'm laughing just thinking about it now. Jeff being an ass, and that conversation with John Oliver when he realized what he was doing and then decided that he should do a better job of it--priceless. Annie and Britta and the oil spill. Poor Shirley feeling excluded. But the highlight of the episode may have been Pierce's mom playing herself out. That, and Betty White (who I usually think is overrated) explaining Inception in English because so-and-so hasn't seen it yet ("For real?").
So Glee and Community both tried to tackle religion this week, and I have to say that Community--as usual--came out on top.
Excuse me, I've got to go rewatch this episode.
Day 6: Favorite Male Character
Giles! He's just so Giles-y. I want one. Also my Grandma thinks he's hot. Okay, I don't really have anything to say about him other than I love him and he's awesome, so...here, have a video (not embedding because I'm lazy and it makes my browser slow).
Oh, and an update on my BSG/HDM whatever-this-is. I've done some more casting/recasting.
Lyra = Kara
Will = Lee
Roger = Zak
Lord Asriel = Adama
Mrs. Coulter = Number Six
Lee Scoresby = Helo
Serafina = Athena
Mary Malone = Laura Roslin
The golden monkey = Leoben
The magisterium also = Leoben (just go with it)
Metatron = Cavil
Iorek is still Iorek. Will's mom will be Carolanne, obvs. I'm missing a Stanislaus Grumman though.
Holy crap that's a lot of tags.
