I am sad (though not remotely surprised) that Kara lost to Buffy in the first round, but if Buffy doesn't trounce Spock I will be thoroughly disappointed in fandom. Seriously. I was surprised to see Aeryn lose to someone from Being Human. Very disappointing. I didn't know people even watched that show... ETA: Leslie Knope and Dexter Morgan are currently losing their respective races. PLEASE FIX THIS TERRIBLE INJUSTICE, FANDOM.

Continuing with the "30 Days of Awesome Women" list that I began yesterday, here are 11-20.  You can read the first part here.

Fandoms include: Doctor Who, The Simpsons, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Alien, His Dark Materials, The Hunger Games, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Poisonwood Bible, Howl's Moving Castle, Discworld, Pushing Daisies, Arrested Development, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dexter, Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Farscape, Lost, Angel, and Bionic Woman.

26 awesome women )

Alright folks, I'll see you tomorrow with the third and final part!
shah_of_blah: (martha)
So here's the thing.  I'm not really into criticizing women (with a few exceptions).  There's far too much of that in the world, and I don't like to add to it.  Last week, I was reading this thing about some female characters in sci-fi, and it reminded me of the flowchart thingy that got linked all over the place a couple months ago.  Long story short, while I certainly see the value in speaking critically about the way women are written (and hell, I do it all the time) I feel it's detrimental to dismiss those women.  So I got the idea to do this post.  And I was going to post it on More Joy Day, which is today (Thursday) but I forgot and have only just remembered.  It will most likely not be Thursday anymore by the time I finish all the coding, so just know that I did start the post with a few minutes left in the day!

Anyway, I have been waiting for the opportune moment to post the "30 Days of Awesome Women" meme.  All in one day.  Or maybe three.  That moment may have been a couple of hours ago, but points for effort.

Behind the cut, you will find the first ten categories and LOTS of pictures.  Fandoms include: Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, X-Files, Veronica Mars, Doctor Who, Dexter, Firefly, Community, Angel, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Chuck, Wonderfalls, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Farscape, ...and I think that's all of them.  There will be more fandoms in the later parts.

Also I cheated and listed multiple characters for just about every category, so there are far more than ten women behind the cut.

22 awesome women )

Okay, that's all for now.  I'll be back with 11-20 tomorrow.  Probably.  And by "tomorrow" I really mean "later today" because it's not Thursday anymore.

In the meantime, feel free to chime in with other awesome women!

Meme!  Stolen from everybody.

the year in fandom )
shah_of_blah: (wolv eep)
I keep thinking about things to post and then not posting them.  So here is an amalgamation of all that.

I almost posted about Dexter last week, just because I was in conniptions, I tell you. Conniptions!  No seriously, I kept having to pause the episode because I was freaking out.  And contorting myself into increasingly more bizarre positions.  I have no idea why.  I guess that was the only way I could express my inner turmoil.  Well, I was also chanting "fuck fuck fuck" under my breath for awhile, but you know, besides that.  I haven't seen this week's episode yet.  Maybe it will be less panic-inducing.

I could tell you about my writing.  But I don't feel like it.  I am woefully behind.  That is all.

Mostly I just want to talk about my various girlcrushes.  I want to do a picspam or something about my soccer girlcrushes.  I HAVE SO MANY.  I have also long held the belief that Abby Wambach is my soccer Starbuck.  Just go with it.  Anyway.  But I haven't done this post because I figured nobody would care to read it.  Hmm.  Also I'd have to find good pictures, which is sometimes difficult with women's soccer.  Lack of resources and all that.

And more recently, I want to post about my Pedro Almodóvar girlcrushes.  For a Spanish seminar this semester, I watched a shit ton of Almodóvar movies, and I AM IN LOVE.  Not with him.  With Carmen Maura.  If there were a fandom for his films, it would be amazing.  Sooooo many awesome women.  So much femslash.  (Though the pessimist in me would say all the fic would be about Antonio Banderas.  Or Gael García Bernal.  Ah well.  At least it would be canon slash, most likely).  Anyway.  I want fic about Carmen Maura and Penelope Cruz and Victoria Abril and Marisa Paredes and Chus Lampreave.  Dear god, I think I want RPF.

Other things...I have gone cold-turkey on Glee.  Yup, I am quitting.  No more.  Please yell at me if I start watching again.  This show is not good for me.  It just makes me angry.

I have reached an attitude of resigned indifference to the forthcoming Hunger Games movie.  more on this )

My decision to Not Care was also prompted by a rewatching of The Golden Compass movie.  I really don't like this movie )

Community (more specifically, Abed) has inspired me to watch more Farscape.  Still haven't finished season 2, but I'm getting there.  Sadly, Netflix took the series off Watch Instantly last month.  Also sadly, it's finals.

Well now, if anyone read all this whole mess of a post, wow!  Congratulations?  Or thank you?  I'm not sure.  I guess the point of this post is that you may have girlcrush picspams to look forward to.  That or a lengthy and very angry dissection of The Golden Compass movie.

Day 6: Favorite Male Character

Giles!  He's just so Giles-y.  I want one.  Also my Grandma thinks he's hot.  Okay, I don't really have anything to say about him other than I love him and he's awesome, so...here, have a video (not embedding because I'm lazy and it makes my browser slow).

Oh, and an update on my BSG/HDM whatever-this-is.  I've done some more casting/recasting.

Lyra = Kara
Will = Lee
Roger = Zak
Lord Asriel = Adama
Mrs. Coulter = Number Six
Lee Scoresby = Helo
Serafina = Athena
Mary Malone = Laura Roslin
The golden monkey = Leoben
The magisterium also = Leoben (just go with it)
Metatron = Cavil

Iorek is still Iorek.  Will's mom will be Carolanne, obvs.  I'm missing a Stanislaus Grumman though.

Holy crap that's a lot of tags.

Day 30. Saddest character death

Spoilers for Dexter season 4 )

[livejournal.com profile] radio_silent  and I finally settled on a name for our upcoming blog.  I'll let you know when it's all set up.  I think I may write an essay about the women of Dexter and how much I love them.  Because oh, I do!  Deb and Maria and Rita, I wish you were real so I could be friends with you all!  I even kind of almost love Lilah a little bit.  In an oh my god you terrify me kind of way.  But she's interesting.  They all are.  Damn, I love this show.
shah_of_blah: (bad horse)
Well, this is fortuitous.  My answers for Days 18 and 19 are the same.  I think Bad Horse is an appropriate icon for a show about a serial killer, don't you?

Day 18. Favorite title sequence

When I think of other sequences that I like, it's mostly because I like the song (Firefly, Wonderfalls).  Dexter's sequence, though, is more than that.  It is the epitome of him as a character, with his "dark passenger" lurking behind every action as he puts on his mask.  Plus, they've made breakfast look terrifying and vaguely gross.  I want to have breakfast with Michael C. Hall.  I bet it would be freaky.

Best TV show cast )

There was a time I would have said BSG for this.  Alas, a certain actor who is often referred to with three initials--begins with an E, ends with JO--kind of ruined that for me.
shah_of_blah: (never fade away)
So, I’ve had His Dark Materials on my mind lately, especially the end. And I don’t want to go into specifics for anyone who might not want spoilers, but it got me thinking. I read The Amber Spyglass when I was a wee thing, and it was the very first work of fiction (be it a book, show, or movie) that made me cry. I remember reading with my mom throughout my childhood, and she’d be sobbing over Anne of Green Gables (I mean, yeah, that one part is really sad) or Black Gold or whatnot and I’d be a rock. Never shed a single tear. But Will and Lyra changed that. Ever since that book, I cry at a lot of books/shows/movies.  But not always the ones you’d expect. Um. So, this post is about things that have made me cry! And by “things” I mostly mean TV shows, but feel free to bring in other works. I want to know what makes you cry! That sounds weird, but it’s true. And gosh, I hope I'm not the only one who thinks about these things.

This is not a comprehensive list. Gods, but there are way too many for me to remember!

a mixed bag )

So readers, what makes you cry? Enquiring minds want to know. Well, I do anyway.  Maybe that’s just my morbid curiosity talking. But what tugs on your heartstrings like no other?  I hope I'm not the only one who enjoys talking about these things!

*The absolute worst movies I've ever seen, if anyone wants to know, would be the following (in no particular order): Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Nine, and Vantage Point.
shah_of_blah: (bad horse)
So for those of you who may not know, Keith Carradine is an actor who has done a lot of stuff (so specific, I know) including win an Oscar (for song-writing, actually).  But most importantly (for me, anyway) he played Harding on Dollhouse and Frank Lundy on Dexter.  I just went to see him give a lecture/Q&A.  He was very relaxed and groovy, and seemed like an all-around nice guy.

When asked how he ended up joining a very niche show like Dollhouse, he said: "I wanted to work with Joss Whedon.  I think he's brilliant."  He went on to say that he had been considered for a role in Firefly (didn't say which...an Alliance guy perhaps, or maybe one of the Hands of Blue?) but hadn't ended up doing it.  But Joss had remembered him, and called him about Dollhouse.  He didn't say anything else about Dollhouse, and didn't say much about Dexter either--just that it's also brilliant.  But the audience was, like, 95% film students who were asking him lots of technical questions, stuff about acting and directing, and some of his movies which I haven't seen.  I felt far too nerdy and inarticulate in the face of such academia to just ask "Hey, so can you tell me about Joss Whedon and Jennifer Carpenter?"  Still, it was pretty cool.

ETA because I just remembered: He did say a bit more about Dollhouse.  Said that he was attracted to the show and the role because he liked the politics, and that playing a villain was fun.  And he enjoyed playing "a representation of corporate evil."

1. spoiler for Chuck Versus the American Hero )

2. They're out of bsg drivers at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van !  You guys, seriously.  It's not much of a commitment--you only have to rec a minimum of 4 fics (if I recall correctly).  And we cannot let our fandom be survived by the freaking Sentinel.  I don't even know what that is.

3. Passed 9000 words on [livejournal.com profile] pilotsbigbang  fic!  It's not exactly close to being done though.  I guess my goal of re-writing the entire fourth season in 10k was a little optimistic.  Thank the gods for that extension.

4. Keith Carradine (Agent Lundy from Dexter and whatshisface Harding from Dollhouse) is coming to speak at my school this week and I'm going to go see him.  It's a little odd though, since I didn't particularly like him that much on either show.  Mostly because I am on TEAM ANTON.
