I made my first post as the new mod for [ profile] the_wireless .  So, you know...there's that.  Fun times.

To cheer myself up, I have been watching The IT Crowd in my copious amounts of free time.  I have to tell you, flist, Moss is my hero.  The s4 episode "Final Countdown" made me ridiculously happy.  ETA: I am watching the next episode and OMG Roy is wearing a Dinosaur Comics t-shirt!  I'm so proud of myself for knowing what one of his t-shirts was about.

Other things making this shitty week less shitty:
-Rewatching all of the Game of Thrones promos and wishing it were April 17 already.
-The knowledge that Community and Parks and Recreation have both been renewed!
-Katee accidentally starting a #thingsstarbuckwouldntsay meme on twitter.  "Oh, Baltar!"  Hahaha.  (Not that I am on twitter.  I just engage in some harmless Katee Sackhoff stalking.  Like you do.)
-This music video: She Don't Like Firefly.  My version would be "He Didn't Like Chiwetel Ejiofor's Performance in Serenity" or something like that.  True story.

P.S. [ profile] help_japan  auctions are still going on (and my thread is here)!

Days 25-27

Day 25: Favourite Buffyverse Saying

What does this mean?  What constitutes a saying?  Anything they say?  Or something they say repeatedly?  Or something they say which I have turned into a saying?  I'm gonna go with the last one.  And for that, I have to say "Well you're certainly a font of nothing."  For some reason, I find this line hilarious.  Every time, without fail.  It's the best line in the pilot.  And my sister and I say it to each other all the time.  Others...hmm..."What's her childhood trauma?" is an old favorite.  "This is all making the kind of sense that is not."  "That's insane troll logic."  "All monkeys are French."  "The Earth is definitely doomed."  Okay, now I'm just quoting things.  And if we are talking about Ats too, I'd have to include "If nothing we do matters, all that matters is what we do" because that succinctly sums up my life philosophy.

Day 26: Favourite Scooby Moment

For this, I really have to go with the "plan" scene from Graduation Day Part 2--you know, where Buffy unveils her plan to this response.

Willow: Crazy is such a strong word.
Giles: Let's not rule it out though.
Buffy: You don't think it can be done?
Giles: I didn't say that.  I might, but...I haven't yet.
Cordelia: Well I personally don't think it would be possible to come up with a crazier plan.
Oz: We attack the mayor with hummus.

Do I really have to go on?  It's brilliant.  Back in the day, I had the whole scene memorized.

Day 27: Cutest Moment

These superlatives are really hard for me.  But I will semi-arbitrarily go with the "extra flamey" scene from the end of New Moon Rising.

The Willow/Oz farewell makes me teary (and I totally have an abandoned WIP on my hard drive called "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" about a reunion) but then Tara and Willow are so cute.  I just love them.

While I'm waiting for the latest Dexter to load, I'm gonna go ahead with this meme!

Oh, and before I forget--I posted a rambly and surprisingly positive review of Glee's "Duets" on Critically Obsessed.

Days 22-24 )what's to come )
shah_of_blah: (jon stewart)
and came back to a million things to read.  Yay!  I love it when that happens.

Also, I just watched Community. let's be ironic )

Day 19: Character You Like That Everyone Else Hates

Sadly, there are FAR TOO MANY possible answers.  I HAVE TO USE CAPSLOCK.

First, we have Dawn Summers.

Now, I'll admit that was pretty annoying in seasons 5 and 6.  But she matured and turned out to be awesome in season 7.  She doesn't deserve all the fandom hate.  And I'm such a contrarian that I feel the need to tell everyone I LIKE DAWN SUMMERS.

Next up: Riley Finn

So yeah, he's no Angel and he and Buffy were never going to get their happily ever after, but you know what?  Riley Finn is a good guy.  And he made Buffy smile.  Everyone complains about him being boring (Captain Cardboard and all that) and okay, so I may have thought the same at one point in time, but every time I watch him in seasons 4 and 5 I remember that I actually don't find him boring at all.  And I like him.  So there.

But the winner for this category is Buffy Summers:

Yes Buffy, I'm confused too.  Not confused that I like you--I love you!  I said you were my favorite character from the show!  No, I'm confused that you are eligible for the category of "character you like that everyone else hates."  Now that is confusing.  Also did I mention that I am dressing as Buffy for Halloween this year?  I am super excited because I whittled my own stake.

20&21: Spike and Willow )
shah_of_blah: (kara sunshine)
I am ridiculously enamored with my imaginary BSG/HDM crossover thing.  I mean, sometimes it's just too good.  Take this moment from the end of The Golden Compass for example, when the children are running from Bolvangar:

Thick clouds obscured the sky, so there was neither moon nor Northern Lights; but by peering closely, the children could make out the deep trail Iorek Byrnison had plowed in the snow.  Lyra encouraged, bullied, hit, half-carried, swore at, pushed, dragged, lifted tenderly, wherever it was needed, and Pantalaimon (by the state of each child's daemon) told her what was needed in each case.

I'll get them there, she kept saying to herself.  I come here to get 'em and I'll bloody get 'em.

Sound familiar?

Anyway, Buffy meme:
Day 10: Least Favorite Season

By process of elimination, essentially, it's season 1.  Everything just doesn't quite 'click' in the beginning.  I elaborated on it more here on Critically Obsessed.

Day 11: Least Favorite Romance

I can't say I ever cared very much about Xander/Cordy.  It's fun and all that, but I always laugh when I see fanfic and stuff wherein they realize that it's True Love and Happily Ever After and all that.  Just no.

Day 12: Least Favorite Episode

Where the Wild Things Are.  No question.  It's soooo bad.  Although I do enjoy these moments, which just goes to show that even the worst episode of this show has some good stuff:

quotes and a clip )
shah_of_blah: (bret looking cool)
For the last couple of days, I've been trying to write a new scene for my [ profile] pilotsbigbang  fic.  I decided (rather suddenly, with no prompting from my beta or anyone else) that this particular scene needed to exist.  Sort of worked out what I wanted to say with it ("sort of" being the operative phrase) and when it ought to take place.  And then proceeded to spend most of my time staring at the Word document.

I have this problem, and I'd be curious to know if other writers on my flist get this too, where I find it very difficult to write new material for a story that feels 'finished' (you know, there's lots of revision to be done but I've got the beginning, middle, and end).  Like, when I was writing the first draft of the story, I wrote furiously for weeks (months, even).  This story consumed my brain.  And then I finished it, and floundered around for a bit before I found a new project.

Now I can't get that energy back.  Frak.  I'm at that 'just write something and worry about the quality later' stage, but it's frustrating.

One thing that has helped, actually, is listening to The Symphony of Science.  They're videos/songs made with clips from, like, science movies/presentations/whatever and autotune.  That may not sound good, but I found them quite stunning--visually, lyrically, and musically.  My favorites so far are "We Are All Connected" and "Our Place in the Cosmos."  They're beautiful in this really odd, almost haunting way.  And I find them to be very good writing music.  If I didn't already have a title for pilotsbigbang, I probably would have snerched something from the 'lyrics' to one of these.  So you should all be grateful I didn't discover this website a couple of months ago, or you might have found yourself reading "We Are Made of Star Stuff" or "The Brink of the Known" or some other equally pretentious title.  Actually, that last one's not so bad...

What else do I have to complain about?  Well, this isn't such a point of frustration as the last, but [ profile] radio_silent  and I are planning to start a blog where we post reviews and stuff of all the television we consume.  Perhaps on tumblr?  Not sure.  We want something with a fandom presence but more officious-looking than LJ.  Like, something I would actually show people I know.  I know some of my flisters are on tumblr...any thoughts?  We'd be posting mostly essays (with pictures probably) and I'm not sure if tumblr's the right place for that, since most of the blogs I read there are multi-media/graphics-based.

The other problem is we can't think of a name.  Need something snappy, geeky, preferably meta, or perhaps containing a pun.  Bah.  When we do get this figured out, I'll post a link.

Days 22 & 23 )
shah_of_blah: (bad horse)
Well, this is fortuitous.  My answers for Days 18 and 19 are the same.  I think Bad Horse is an appropriate icon for a show about a serial killer, don't you?

Day 18. Favorite title sequence

When I think of other sequences that I like, it's mostly because I like the song (Firefly, Wonderfalls).  Dexter's sequence, though, is more than that.  It is the epitome of him as a character, with his "dark passenger" lurking behind every action as he puts on his mask.  Plus, they've made breakfast look terrifying and vaguely gross.  I want to have breakfast with Michael C. Hall.  I bet it would be freaky.

Best TV show cast )

There was a time I would have said BSG for this.  Alas, a certain actor who is often referred to with three initials--begins with an E, ends with JO--kind of ruined that for me.
shah_of_blah: (bret looking cool)
Day 16. Your guilty pleasure show

I thought about saying BSG, but the 'guilty' part of 'guilty pleasure' isn't that I watch the show, but the intensity with which I watch it.  You know, my complete and utter geekery.  But for a genuine guilty pleasure...I think I have to go with Glee.  Because the writing is so uneven, and because I see the stereotypes and the tokenization and the weirdly sexist bits.  I see these things, but I watch the show anyway.  Come on, it's just so much fun.  Plus, Kurt's dad makes me cry.  And sometimes Puck sings ("Lady is a Tramp"--omg I just about died of squee).

Day 17. Favorite mini series

This was a little trickier.  There were two runner-ups (runners-up?).
1. Battlestar Galactica - the miniseries is really frakking good.  I think it's an excellent piece of television.  But I do think of it as part of the show, which I talk about all the time.  So for the sake of variety, I didn't choose BSG.
2. The animated version of Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters (on imdb).  This is a really awesome adaptation from the book.  I mean, it's word-for-word!  And the book is absolutely hilarious.  If you're a Pratchett fan, you should definitely check this out.

But for sheer fabulousness and amount of time I've wasted spent watching it, I had to go with the BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries.   Some clips for your enjoyment:
two scenes )
shah_of_blah: (bret looking cool)
First of all, a couple Lost links, because clearly I was mistaken when I said that the last post would be my last Lost post.  Here's some really interesting meta about the finale, with lots of retrospection and philosophizing: The Lost Finale: And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain.  And here is a video that made me laugh: Unanswered Lost Questions.

Day 08. A show everyone should watch

I gave this a fair amount of thought, because it's hard to find a show that appeals to, you know, "everyone."  The runner-up for this category is Wonderfalls, because I think it's pretty damn close to having universal appeal.  But I already did that one earlier in the meme.  So instead, I give you...Flight of the Conchords!

persuasion in video form )

Day 09. Best scene ever

"Best scene ever" is kind of difficult.  I'm just going to pick a scene that I love, from an episode that I love.  And hopefully one that I can find on youtube.  Nope, can't find it.  Damn.  Will just have to use screencaps.  The scene is from the Firefly episode "Objects in Space," which is my favorite episode of the show, and one of my favorite episodes of television ever.  I think it's stunningly beautiful, if you can't tell from my header.  My favorite scene is towards the end of the episode, when Jubal Early has incapacitated all of the crew (or so he thinks) and has a gun aimed at Simon as he calls for River to surrender before he shoots her brother.

A show that you wish more people were watching:

Reasons you should be watching Chuck )

Also, I frakking loved the latest Glee.  I think "Dream on" was my favorite episode from this season (or is this still the first season?  I'm so confused).  I loved every single song.  Artie's storyline was great.  And there wasn't any fail, or random paraplegic kids.

All Doctor Who fans should watch this video.  I have just watched it for the third time. Spoilers for the fourth season finale and for End of Time as well.

shah_of_blah: (jon stewart)

Well, mostly.  You know, there's that one pesky scene with one of those good old "fill this in later" notes.  And some stuff that needs editing.  But generally speaking, Rough Draft = Done.  Good timing too, since I just signed up to be a pinch-hitter for [ profile] bsg_remix .

*Imagine that in Daniel Day Lewis's voice from There Will Be Blood.

And now, have a video that always makes me smile, and is vaguely related to this post:cut to spare your browsers )

Apparently today is More Joy Day.  Who knew?  First off, I don't have a thread on [ profile] help_haiti  but a few of my flisters do and it seems like a groovy thing.  Check it out if you think you might be interested.  But if not, there are other options!  Cribbed from various places around the internet:

Text 'HAITI' to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross relief efforts or text "Yele" to 501501 to donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill) or you can visit and click 'donate'.

These three charities, and many others, are providing care. If you can contribute to help fund their emergency efforts, please do.

* Doctors Without Borders

* Oxfam America

* Yéle Haiti

And now, a few things that have brought me joy.  Some fandom, some not.
