Three memes snagged from [ profile] daybreak777 :

movies )

And lastly, a fic meme!

If you had to delete all but five of your stories, which five would you keep and why? (Or ten if you prolific)

The Breath Between: I worked frakking hard on this one.  For a long frakking time.  It's my longest completed bsg fic to date, and I'm quite proud of it, so yeah, I'd keep it!

Portraits: My ode to Kara Thrace.  I feel like this piece says more than the majority of my other fics.  And it's got mythology!  I could never throw this one away, not when it's all about how awesome my girl is.

The Disappearing Ground: Well.  Yeah.  This one isn't perfect (none of them are, obviously, but there's one huge glaring flaw in this one that I long to fix every time I reread it).  Still, I wrote it because I really needed to, and I'm very attached to it.  The last two lines might be the best thing I've ever written.

Say Anything At All: Five times Kara said something she didn't mean to say (but not necessarily something she didn't mean).  This is just my big ol' gen Kara fic that's actually a bit shippy, but you know.  From childhood to 4.5.  It was a lot of fun to write, and yeah, I'm proud of it.

Five Times Kara Told Someone She Missed Them: Like Portraits, I think of this story as trying to say something, which might be a bit surprising given the brevity and the format.  Five short scenes that illustrate Kara's evolution over the years through the way she relates to others.

Post a rec list singling out the best of your own fics. Tell people why you are especially proud of those particular fics, and of course provide links to them. Yes, that's right, this step involves self-promotion. How else are people supposed to find your fics? List as many or as few as you feel appropriate to represent your body of writing.

Also include a paragraph about the types of fics you most enjoy reading or are most interested in reading in the immediate future -- favorite tropes, pairings, fandoms, whatever. If you're particularly lazy, link to that Dear Writer post you did for whatever holiday exchange comes to mind.

Reply to other rec posts (like for example the one you are reading now) by reccing a fic of your own that might fit the original poster's tastes, or that you'd just really like them to read, because maybe they don't know they'd like it.

I didn't do that last part but whatevs.

What do I like to read?
Just about anything involving Kara, with a strong preference for Kara/Lee.  I'll read other ships too but I have to be in the mood.  There are certain things within the K/L oeuvre that I get tired of--like pre-mini or UB-era fics--and sometimes read less enthusiastically than others.  But I really will read anything...although I'd say the most important thing for me is probably characterization--specifically of Kara, but Lee's important too.  Um.  Anyway.  What else do I like?  Angst, but not over the top.  Drama.  Sometimes tragedy.  Sometimes happy endings.  Uh...crossovers?  Basically, I read a lot of fanfiction.

A few of my favorites that I've written:

As you may be aware, I am an avid reader of fanfiction. “Avid” may not be a strong enough word to convey just how much time I waste spend reading fic (old, new, good, bad). So why this rec list now? Because I’ve been thinking for the past few weeks that many of you LJers may not venture to good ol’ Or those ventures may be infrequent and trepidatious. Have no fear! For I, I am an expert.

And so, a list of Fics I Like that are (as far as I know) only on FFN and not LJ.

the recs )

Feel free to add any I may have missed.  I’m confident that I’ve read them all, but some may have slipped my mind.  And most of all, read and enjoy. :)

Status of my TV: 10 episodes of Dexter, 7 of Dollhouse.  Still watching Big Bang.  May have given up on The Office.  CANNOT WAIT FOR THE RETURN OF CHUCK.

A fic meme:

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

My fic is archived here (bsg) and here (other).

Peru is still awesome!  Most recently, I went to Machu Picchu.  AND I WALKED THERE.  At some point, there may be a post about this.  Maybe.

fasten your seatbelts--it's the commentary! )

Now you know my commentary style.  I hope you don't regret encouraging me, because I am going to do at least one more!

Regardless, I’m probably going to post a commentary-ish thing about remixing.  But that won’t be until after the reveal in July, for obvious reasons.

Everybody who writes should read this essay on fanfiction and original fiction by [ profile] mistful .  It won't take you long (unless you read exceptionally slowly) and it is really good.  And for me anyway, really true.  The thing is, I started writing original fiction long before I started writing fanfiction, and I sort of do both simultaneously although fanfiction is just so much easier.  So unless I have a deadline I never finish my original stories.  (Hooray for the composition class I'm taking!).  Anyway, the essay's really good, and [ profile] mistful 's been published so she must know what she's talking about, right?

Fanfiction, Original Work and Marmalade

Some notable things:

1. [profile] sl_podcast has just posted the links and all that to the latest episode of the Strangely Literal podcast.  When Episode 49 of the podcast went online, my co-conspirator [profile] visualthinker11 sent me one VERY excited email because we were the subjects of the podcast.  And by 'we' I mean Oz, or rather our diary o' Oz from The Very Secret Diaries...on the Hellmouth!  In conclusion, SL has posted a reading of Oz's VSD and it is super exciting to listen to one's work read aloud by a complete stranger.

2. I miss BSG.  And it was only one week.  I'm very excited for Friday, but also a little bit worried.  On the one hand, I'll be watching on a real TV.  On the other hand, I'll be watching with my father and sister.  And the problem there is that they do not love BSG the way I do.  And they could care less about Kara/Lee.  My dad always refers to her as 'Starbuck,' possibly because he can't remember her real name.  This is not a good sign.  I have a tendency to spaz out, and while I always pretended I wasn't watching BSG when I was watching it on my computer at school, I kind of enjoyed the semi-privacy of my semi-clandestine viewing experience.  If that made any sense.

This funny thing happened in my Greek Archaeology class yesterday.  Just before class started, I was actually writing the beginnings of a (bsg) fic in the back of my notebook, and I look up and what is my professor writing on the board?  CYLON.  I did a double-take in my seat.

Apparently, Cylon was this Athenian guy around the 7th century (BCE).  He tried to oust the ruling aristocracy in Athens, and he failed spectacularly.  He had the support of the army, and others (I think it was basically a populist movement), but yeah, he failed.  Most of his followers were killed, and he took refuge in the altar of Athena, where he should have been safe.  But he was dragged out and put to death by the Alcmaeonidae (the head honcho family).  And this is where the Alcmaeonidae (try spelling that five times fast) picked up a nifty little curse, on account of how you're really not supposed to drag people from the altar.  So then the family was cursed; supposedly, they were banned from Athens, but they were only actually kicked out on the rare occasion that someone had enough power to depose them.  I wonder if Glen Larson was up on his Ancient Greek history.

Ummmmmm Alan Tudyk...oh yes!  I was watching Arrested Development instead of working yesterday (like you do) and started cackling when Alan Tudyk appeared as Pastor Veal.  Too funny.  I love him.  I miss Wash.

And then I took a break from Arrested Development to acquire and watch a certain episode of Robot Chicken, the one with Katee Sackhoff, Michael Hogan, Tahmoh Penikett, and Joss Whedon.  Yeah, it was hilarious, although the battlestar bit was unfortunately about 30 seconds long.  But still, the whole thing was very funny.  I recommend it.  The episode is called "Rabbits on a Roller Coaster" for no discernable reason.  I don't think there were any rabbits.

I said "and more," was there anything else...?  Oh, yes, there was.  So I was re-reading old fic of mine (like you do) and this odd thing happened.  I was reading Counting Breaths and there's one sentence in the last segment that says the exact opposite of what I meant.  The sentence: "She is too tired to miss anyone, and it seems unnatural to be glad they aren’t going through the same hell."  I'm not sure how it got all convoluted, but there's that double negative, with the "unnatural" and the "they aren't," and really I think it should have said "sad" instead of "glad" or some variant on that.  Nobody commented on it, so I wonder if they assumed that was what I meant or, like me, subconsciously rewrote it in their head to mean what it ought to?  Ah well.

The vast majority of fanfiction is crap.

Sometimes I read the crappier elements for fun, and sometimes they just piss me off.  But even the good stuff has some faux pas (what's the plural of that?  faux pases?  I never took French).  And those piss me off too.
[profile] visualthinker11
can attest to that fact because I have bitched to her about all these things on many occasions.  So I'm attempting to create a list of all my fanfiction-related pet peeves.  I'm just skipping all the general spelling/grammar/punctuation/writing problems.

I'm not sure what it says about me that when I've got writer's block and I can't concentrate on my schoolwork I start listing all the things I don't want to write instead of all the things I could write.  But hey, it was fun for me.  And maybe for you too.  If you have any similar peeves to add to the collection, please do.   I'm thinking this may be a serial thing.
