I've been feeling like I ought to post for awhile, but I have refrained because I didn't actually have anything to post. Weird. So I thought I might do a TV post, but I don't have a lot to say. Possibly because I have not been watching an overabundance of television (mostly just Community and Parks & Recreation). All I want to say is that I love Community and I love Troy Barnes and this most recent episode made me very happy. It also made me want to watch Reading Rainbow again.
Anyway, one of the reasons I have been a bit MIA recently is that I have been working on my thesis, which is a collection of short stories. I just turned in the first draft this morning. It's approximately 25,000 words. Now that it's, well, semi-done I might be around LJ more. If nothing else, I've got to write my remix fic.
In the meantime, here's a meme:
1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions (not the same questions that I was asked and not the same questions for everyone)
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.
nazkey asked me...
1. You have the chance to have a one-on-one with Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, James Joyce, Samuel Richardson or Dante. Who would you pick and why?
James Joyce. Hands down. I don't really know why. Of these, I've only read works by Joyce (Portrait of the Artist) and Spenser (Faerie Queen). I'm not that crazy about either of them, but one of my life goals is to read Ulysses. A few months ago, I was telling a classmate about this desire of mine, and my fear that I wouldn't be able to understand it without the aid of a professor. She said something about a knowledge of Homer being all I needed. I think. Also that "who do you write like" website has told me I am James Joyce in the past (also Dan Brown, Margaret Atwood, and Gertrude Stein, so you can decide whether or not it's to be trusted). Anyway, yes, I would like to meet James Joyce.
2. You are reliving the plot of "An Affair to Remember" where you meet the love of your life on a cruise, but are involved with someone and you agree to meet this man on top of the Empire State Building in a year. Do you? Why?
Well, I've never seen that movie, but yeah I would probably do it. Although the location is not ideal as I am afraid of heights. But I've never even been inside the Empire State Building and I'm always seeking new experiences. It would probably make for a good story, no matter what happened.
3. Who are your Oscar picks? Do you even care?
I really, really want True Grit to win Best Picture. I loved Black Swan and The King's Speech and The Kids Are All Right too (and I liked some of the others) but for some reason, I feel strongly that True Grit is the only one which truly deserves this accolade. Natalie Portman should win Best Actress and Colin Firth should win Best Actor, but the Coen brothers just outdid themselves with True Grit.
4. You've been nominated for a Noble prize. What category are you in and what did you do to deserve the accolades?
Hahaha, okay, I'm not going to answer this seriously, but instead I will tell you an amusing anecdote. Background: In addition to being named after a Beatles song, I was also named after a Mario Vargas Llosa character. My mom was a big fan (key word here being "was," as they have since parted over political differences). So when he won the Nobel Prize, I got this email from my mother in my inbox:
Hiya darling! Did you know that Mario Vargas Llosa, that Peruvian jerk who writes fabulous novels, just won the Nobel prize for lit?
Since “[character]”* was running through my head when you emerged, and since I told him that when I met him several years ago, it’s almost as if you are winning the prize!
Congratulations!
So by the transitive power of Mario Vargas Llosa, I have already won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
*At this point, I don't actually care if people know my first name or not. I just enjoy being coy about it, and I'm curious if anyone who doesn't already know can figure it out.
5. If you had to pick ONE song, book, movie & TV show which best describes who you are, what would they be?
I am assuming you mean just one, and not one of each. That would be way easier, wouldn't it? I'd probably say something different if you asked me tomorrow, but right now I'm inclined to say Stranger Things Happen, a collection of short stories by Kelly Link. I want to be her. When I read this book, it was like a revelation. That is what I want to write. So yeah, I want to be her. I suppose Stranger Things Happen encapsulates a lot of my weird fascination with words and the world. If you read it with that in mind, it might tell you something about me.

Photo post!
Dec. 22nd, 2009 03:27 pmA few weeks ago, I decided to do some sort of photo post of my travels through Perú. Then
rose_griffes requested such a post in her wishlist! Here you go! Enjoy.
( pics ahoy )
I saw Avatar (in 3D!) and loved it. But I think what it comes down to, pretty much, is this: In Soviet Pandora, Mother Nature CRUSH you! (sorry, it had to be done)
Status of my TV: 2 episodes of Dollhouse, 6 episodes of Dexter, 8 episodes of The Office.
Merry Christmas, if that's your thing. And I'll see you in 2010 (still can't believe it's been 10 years since 2000, holy crap).
ETA: LJ, I would really appreciate it if you didn't turn everything into a giant block of text.

Back in the U.S. of A.
Dec. 12th, 2009 02:58 pmHello LiveJournal! My lurking days are over. I have returned to the motherland, by which I mean the US. Oh my! Now, it’s not really my style to talk about real life here in the ether. You may have noticed this trend. But, this being something of a special occasion, I thought I would post, not a summary of my semester abroad—as that would be impossible!—but a collection of highlights/anecdotes.
( read if you dare )
In other news, something DREADFUL has happened. So I was really trying to concentrate on this plotfic when suddenly one night I started a new fic. While I was trying to sleep, no less (it was one of those times where you write in the dark because you’re too tired to get up and turn on a light). Worst of all, it needs a plot. I can’t handle two plotfics at once! I can barely handle one. Frak. And I really want to write it too. Goddamn. We’ll see.
Upcoming Posts (in no particular order):
-My Starbuck playlist
-My wishlist (it’s never too late for wishlists)
-A photo post. Because as “Los Hermanos Gringo” says, “un viaje a Perú sin muchas fotos es muy tonto. Nadie va a creernos sobre las cosas fabulosas que veamos.” (Translation: a trip to Perú without many photos is very stupid. Nobody will believe us about the fabulous things we saw.) I have a strict no-photos-of-me-on-the-LJ policy, but most of my photos are of mountains/trees/ruins so I think I can find a few decent landscapes.
-My inevitable TV post about everything I have missed in the last three months
-My end-of-the-year fic review! I am ridiculously excited for this. And it will be on my 2-year LJ anniversary.
My TV to-do list:
-Watch all aired episodes of Glee (even the one I watched in Spanish, because I’ve just got to figure out this one line that made no sense)
-Watch season 2 of T:SCC (having other nerds in the family is so useful because my dad has already bought this on DVD)
-Watch all aired episodes of Dollhouse
-Watch Katee’s Big Bang Theory episode (I saw Trucco’s on the plane)
-Watch new season of The Office
-Watch the three DW specials I’ve missed
-Watch the new season of Dexter
-Rewatch Arrested Development...
As you can see, I lead a busy and exciting life.

Nov. 10th, 2009 07:12 pmA fic meme:
Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.
My fic is archived here (bsg) and here (other).
Peru is still awesome! Most recently, I went to Machu Picchu. AND I WALKED THERE. At some point, there may be a post about this. Maybe.

Sep. 25th, 2009 02:19 pmHello! I am in Peru. Which is wondrous in and of itself. But a few things have happened that I felt like sharing with you lot...

Not gonna lie. This was the very first thing I bought when I got to Cusco.
Also the following conversation happened today on a bus. I was sitting next to my friend J, and somehow we got to talking about our mutual love of Chuck. And the awesomeness that is Casey.
I also had a very strange dream, which was mostly about cough drops (I had a cough, and really wanted some Ricola cough drops). But the "very" part of "very strange" is that
taragel was in it. I know, right? Tara, you were evil and you hid the cough drops from me. And also killed birds (that were not pigeons). I don't know why. Feel free to be disturbed by all this. I must have been reading your fic before I went to sleep that night (because I have actually been reading fic--it's just a complicated process that involves my biweekly wireless session and saving fic in Word documents).
Oh yeah and uh, don't spoil me for Dollhouse. Please. I won't be watching for quite some time (read: months).

My impending leave of absence...
Aug. 26th, 2009 11:29 pmSo here's the thing. I'm not going to be around much for the next three months. Why? Because I am doing a semester abroad in Peru (Cusco)* ergo A) I will only have internet access when I go to an internet cafe, and B) I should probably get out and do things while I'm, you know, in Peru, rather than bumming around on my computer like I usually do!
I expect I'll check LJ semi-regularly, but I will probably be miles behind and anyway if I don't comment ever this is why. I also probably won't be posting. Unless I miraculously finish my plot fic which, hey, it could happen. Sometimes when I cannot read fic I become massively productive in terms of writing fic. But who knows what will happen? I certainly don't! And right now my brain is mostly consumed with 'omg I'm leaving in 36 hours and I haven't started packing.'
So anyway, try not to have too much fun without me. I'll see you on the other side! (Nos vemos al otro lado?)
*Anyone got any tips? I've never been to Peru before.

So...meme!
Feb. 20th, 2009 01:53 amYes, I am doing that meme. The association meme. I got it from
rose_griffes . You comment on somebody's meme post, and they give you 5 things they associate with you. And then you post the meme on your journal, with more stuff about those 5 things. Comment if you want me to tell you what I associate with you.
( Buffy, Eddie Izzard, Salman Rushdie, Joss Whedon, English )
On an unrelated note, Pushing Daisies fans might be interested in this bit of news about the unaired episodes: they'll be screened at the Paley Fest. I do not know if I am glad that some people are getting to see them, or just mad that I'm not. Ah, I have just been informed by an anonymous source that ABC is contractually obligated to show these episodes, but the contract doesn't specify when they have to show them. They might air them this summer as a promo thing for the DVD release.

It's a new day
Jan. 20th, 2009 05:00 pmI'm a little behind with the online stuff. Why? Because I've been caught up in the invasion of my nation's capital. I went on Sunday to the Lincoln Memorial for the concert, and I've just returned from You Know What. Both were awesome. I'm so glad I went. It was chaotic, as this city is just not built for such an influx of people (especially people who don't know the Capitol from the White House, or those who think the National Mall is a shopping center). It was chaotic, but so wonderful. Anyway, I just kind of want to tell everyone I know that I was there. And my feet hurt. I may write up some sort of account of my day at some point but I am too tired at the moment.
Hopping on the bandwagon...
Nov. 1st, 2008 03:19 amWell I wasn't going to do this meme, but I've been tagged twice, so...might as well. Tagged by
cattm and
taragel .
RULES:
A) People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blogs & replace any question that they dislike with a new question formulated by themselves.
B) Tag 8 people to do this quiz & those who are tagged cannot refuse. These people must state who they were tagged by & cannot tag the person whom they were tagged by. Continue this game by sending it to other people.
I'm not actually going to tag anybody. Participate if you so desire.

So I've been busy with real life stuff, and before all that happened I'd begun quite a few fannish endeavors. I came back and...was slightly less interested in some of them. Decided to kick this thing out of the nest because it doesn't make sense anyway, so I'm giving up on trying to make it better. Also giving up on adding pictures because I'm too lazy for that and I don't know how to put the text in the pictures anyway, so whatever.
This was inspired ages ago by
latteaddict's Unfinished Business Revamped.
This thing that I wrote is stranger and not nearly as funny, and also lacking pictures. It's sort of my version of Home, except not really. The idea was for it to be my version of Home, but it sort of mutated.
( click for Home + inappropriate Scrubs references! )
I've been doing other things...which I shall briefly summarize should anyone be interested:
( blah )

Beware of CAPS LOCK
May. 10th, 2008 11:55 pmUm, hi, so I feel that my life has been very interesting for once, and it's only slightly unfortunate that all this exciting stuff is happening while I'm wading through finals. But anyway, I'm going to blather on about my life for a bit, feel free to skip down to the fandom stuff.
Ok, there's the story about my life, except that I'm still neglecting the research paper that's due on Monday but pshaw. I totally got back to campus and elected to watch Battlestar instead of researching. Of course, I have excellent priorities.
OMG 'FAITH' WAS ASTONISHING!

My First Meme! Books!
Apr. 30th, 2008 08:25 pmThings that are good:
-finishing my history paper
-my sandwich
-returning the ginormous stack of library books that has been taking up space in my room
-my sandwich (it's very good)
Things that are bad:
-my history paper
-the stupid things I did while stressing over the history paper
-the library being mean and not having the books i need for my NEXT research paper
-my sudden inability to write decent dialogue
Anyway, blah blah blah, in the midst of the Great History Paper Panic o' April, I of course went online and saw this meme. Snagged from
bastardsnow
What we have here is the top 106 books (why 106?) most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish.

Allow me to bitch about real life for a bit. I have so much reading to do, it's insane. I really like my classes--I fought to get spots in most of them--but the downside of having 4.5 truly interesting classes is that I now have to do the work for said classes. Whereas last semester, I had 1 truly interesting class, and 3 boring classes that I could more or less bs my way through. Grrr.
( Arrrgh )
